Gonzalo S. Paz, PhD

Georgetown University, Washington, DC

Abstract

This presentation aims to analyze the impact of China in the Global South, as well as United States’ and regional responses. China has become a world power, and the effects are felt in every corner of the globe. Dr. Gonzalo Paz will focus this probe in the context of the broader and growing United States-China strategic competition in Latin America and the Caribbean (“Latin America”, “the region”) in the 21 century, particularly after the world financial and economic crisis of 2008/9, with special detail following the US presidential election of November 2016 (that elected Donald Trump). This process has implications for the European Union and the speaker will explore which lessons can be learnt.
