Two EURICS residents of spring 2020 contribute to this second issue of the EURICS letter: Sarah Kirchberger, Head of Asia-Pacific Strategy and Security at the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University (Germany), and Xiaobo Zhang, Chair professor of Economics at the National School of Development, Peking University (China).

Now that the COVID-19 pandemic has spread across the globe and its economic impact is projected to be much worse than the 2008 financial crisis, it is time for a preliminary assessment. What does this global health crisis say about China’s great power status and its role in the world from a security policy perspective? What are the strengths and weaknesses it highlights, and what opportunities and threats does this pandemic pose to China? What is the impact of the lockdown on small and medium firms?
