Research on China in Europe

From one European country to another, the organisation of Chinese studies and its approach varies. Research traditions differ. As Tiziana Lippiello, Professor of Classical Chinese and Rector of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice explains: “Europe can become an intellectual space where the humanities and social sciences constitute the most fertile ground for dialogue and exchange on China.” But for this to happen, a better cooperation between European researchers is necessary and new bridges must be built between EU countries.

In this fourth issue of Eurics’ Briefs and Analyses, a cross interview offers us Italian, German, French and Dutch perspectives on Chinese studies (Tiziana Lippiello, Rector of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Professor of Classical Chinese; Barbara Mittler, Chair of Chinese Studies at the University of Heidelberg, co-founder of the Center for Asian and Transcultural Studies; Philippe Peycam, Director of the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden, historian of Southeast Asia; Hilde De Weerd, Professor of Chinese History at the University of Leiden; Alain Peyraube, Emeritus Research Director at the CNRS, Director of Studies at the EHESS.) Alongside Aurélie Varrel (CNRS research fellow and director of the French Asian Studies Network), Alain Peyraube also sheds light on the long tradition of Chinese studies in France.
